GREAT STORIES OF THE BIBLE CREATION GENESIS 1

God created the heavens and the earth—everything you see and everything you don't. The earth was a formless, empty void, shrouded in darkness. The Spirit of God hovered over the deep waters. Then God spoke, "Let there be light," and light appeared. Seeing that the light was good, God separated it from the darkness. He named the light "Day" and the darkness "Night." Evening came, and then morning—this was the first day.

Next, God said, "Let there be a sky to divide the waters!" And God made the sky, separating the waters below from the waters above. He called the sky "Heaven." Evening came, and then morning—this was the second day.

God continued, "Let the waters under the sky be gathered into one place so that dry land may appear." And it happened. God named the dry land "Earth" and the gathered waters "Oceans." God saw that it was good.

Then God said, "Let the earth produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and fruit-bearing trees of all kinds." And so it happened. The earth sprouted with plants and trees, each producing seeds and fruits according to their kind. God saw that it was good. Evening came, and then morning—this was the third day.

God spoke again, "Let there be lights in the sky to separate day from night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons, days, and years." God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars and set them in the sky to shine on the earth, to rule over day and night, and to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good. Evening came, and then morning—this was the fourth day.

God then said, "Let the waters swarm with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the sky." So God created the great sea creatures and every kind of living thing that moves in the water, and every type of bird. God saw that it was good and blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply, filling the waters and the skies." Evening came, and then morning—this was the fifth day.

God spoke again, "Let the earth produce every kind of living creature: livestock, reptiles, and wild animals of every sort." And it was so. God made all kinds of animals, each according to their kind, and He saw that it was good.

Finally, God said, "Let us make human beings in our image, to reflect our nature, so they may rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, and all the earth." So God created humans in His own image, male and female. He blessed them, saying, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and every living creature on earth. I have given you every seed-bearing plant and every fruit-bearing tree for food. And I have given all the green plants for food to every living thing on earth." God looked over everything He had made, and it was very good. Evening came, and then morning—this was the sixth day.

UNDERSTANDING CREATION AND ITS IMPORTANCE

Today, many Christians are swayed by what modern science says, leading them to question the Bible's account of creation. But there are critical points to consider about the flaws in the world's view of creation:

The word "day" in Genesis 1 refers to six literal 24-hour days. When paired with phrases like "evening and morning" or "the sixth day," it clearly indicates a normal day.

Radiometric dating methods, which suggest rocks are millions of years old, rely on assumptions about the original composition of the rocks and the past decay rates. Since the Bible teaches the earth is only thousands of years old, these assumptions are flawed.

Scientists don't directly observe atoms changing; they measure the byproducts and assume the changes happened over a long period. But what if their assumptions are wrong?

  • Assumption 1: The original number of unstable atoms in rocks is unknown. Scientists can only measure how many unstable and stable atoms remain today.

  • Assumption 2: The decay rates of atoms in the past are assumed to be the same as today, which might not be accurate.

Genesis 1 emphasizes that God created creatures separately "according to their kinds." While there is variation within species, such as among different breeds of dogs, the basic kinds remain distinct—cats remain cats, and dogs remain dogs.

Genesis 1 also asserts that God specially created the first humans in His image, not as descendants of apes. Though there are anatomical similarities among mammals, humans are uniquely distinct.

Why is it important that we believe God’s Word about Creation?

BECAUSE CREATION SPEAKS TO HIS ONGOING SUPREMACY.

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities -all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. (Colossians 1: 15-17)

Creation speaks to God's ongoing supremacy. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. By Him, all things were created—both visible and invisible. He is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together (Colossians 1:15-17). Understanding creation as God's work underscores His authority and the centrality of Christ in all things.

BECAUSE CREATION STANDS AS A TESTIMONY AGAINST THE UNGODLY.

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and crawling creatures. Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. For they exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen (Romans 1:20-25)

Romans 1:20-25 explains that creation reveals God's invisible attributes, leaving humanity without excuse for not honoring Him. Those who reject God exchange His truth for a lie, worshiping the creation rather than the Creator. Creation itself stands as a testimony against those who refuse to acknowledge God.

BECAUSE CREATION IS THE BEGINNING OF FAITH.

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval. By faith we understand that the worlds were prepared by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things which are visible. (Hebrews 11: 1-3)

Hebrews 11:1-3 tells us that faith begins with understanding that the world was created by God's word. This belief is foundational for all acts of faith recorded in Scripture. If Satan can make us doubt the reality of creation, he can undermine the foundation of our faith.

BECAUSE CREATION HAS A CONNECTION TO THE GOSPEL AND CHRIST.

He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. (Colossians 1: 18-20)

Colossians 1:18-20 shows the link between creation and the gospel. Christ, who created all things, also reconciles all things to Himself through the cross. Believing in creation is crucial because it connects directly to the gospel message and Christ's redemptive work.

BECAUSE CREATION IS THE HOPE THAT THERE IS MORE.

knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you. For all things are for your sakes, so that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal. (2 Corinthians 4: 14-18)

2 Corinthians 4:14-18 speaks of the hope that God, who created all things, will continue His creative work in us. Just as He raised Jesus, He will raise us and renew us day by day. Belief in creation assures us that God can and will bring about new beginnings, making us new creations in Christ.

He took nothing and made something so He can take the nothingness of our life and make something out of it! The words of Bill and Gloria Gaither express this well.

Something beautiful
Something good
All my confusion He understood
All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife
But He made something beautiful of my life.

The God who created the universe can make you a new creature in Christ Jesus. The God who ordered the world can bring order to your life. The God who designed every cell in your body can give your life purpose. Stop worshiping the creation; worship the Creator.
